Celebrating Jimmy Breslin

A host of eminent journalists and writers, convened by Pete Hamill, celebrate the career of Pulitzer Prize-winner Jimmy Breslin. An inimitable New York voice, the city’s “steadiest and most accurate chronicler” (Tom Robbins, The Village Voice, March 19 2002), Breslin was born in Queens, New York in October 1929. He started as a copy-boy at the age of fifteen at the Long Island Press and then worked as a reporter covering fires, crime and sports for that paper. In the late 1950s he became a sports columnist at the New York Journal-American and in 1963 he published his first book, Can’t Anybody Here Play This Game? The Improbable Saga of the New York Mets’ First Year. Breslin wrote his city-side column for the New York Herald-Tribune from 1963 to 1966. He was at The Daily News from 1976 to 1988 where he received the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Commentary in 1986. He then joined Newsday from 1988 until his retirement as a columnist in 2004. Pioneering in style and in focus, his columns were peopled with the prominent, the shady and those struggling with poverty and crime. He also reported from Northern Ireland, Vietnam and other places beyond New York. His first novel, The Gang that Couldn’t Shoot Straight, was published in 1970 and was made into a successful film. His most recent book The Good Rat: A True Story was published in 2008. In all, he has published seven novels and ten works of non-fiction.

Fighting to the Death: Moral Paradoxes in Modern Warfare

As part of the 2009 SHARP Lecture Series, in conjunction with the Selma Rubin Distinguished Lecture Series, Gunnar Heinsohn, frequent contributor to the Wall Street Journal and the Economist, will be speaking on modern warfare and terrorism in relation to his now famous Youth Bulge Theory.

Gunnar Heinsohn is a German sociologist and economist. Since 1984, he has been a tenured professor at the University of Bremen, where he heads the Raphael-Lemkin Institute for Comparative Genocide Research named for Raphael Lemkin. His list of publications includes almost 700 scholarly articles, conference presentations, and books. His research has been focused on developing new theories regarding the history and theory of civilization.

He is known most widely for his theory of the Youth Bulge. He argues that an excess in especially young adult male population predictably leads to social unrest, war and terrorism, as the "third and fourth sons" that find no prestigious positions in their existing societies rationalize their impetus to compete by religion or political ideology. Heinsohn claims that most historical periods of social unrest lacking external triggers (such as rapid climatic changes or other catastrophic changes of the environment) and most genocides can be readily explained as a result of a built up youth bulge, including European colonialism, 20th century Fascism, and ongoing conflicts such as that in Darfur, The Palestinian uprisings in 1987-1993 and 2000 to present, and terrorism.

Heinsohn's contributions to genocide research include an encyclopedia of genocides, a generalized version of youth bulge theory and a new theory of Hitler´s motivation for the Holocaust.

Nancy Cartwright, a professor of philosophy at the London School of Economics, will deliver New York University’s Annual Lewis Burke Frumkes Lecture on Monday, November 16, 7:30 p.m. at NYU’s Hemmerdinger Hall, Silver Center (100 Washington Square East [at Washington Place]). Cartwright’s lecture is titled “Causation: What Can Be the Use of It?” [Subway Lines: A, B, C, D, E, F, V (West 4th Street); R, W (8th Street); 6 (Astor Place)]

The lecture is hosted by New York University’s Graduate School of Arts and Science and the Department of Philosophy. The event is free and open to the public, which may call 212.998.8320 for more information.

Cartwright, who is also a professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of California at San Diego, is a philosopher of the natural and social sciences who works on issues of causation, modeling, and objectivity. Much of her current research is concerned with how to improve evidence-based policy. Her published works include: How the Laws of Physics Lie (1983); Nature's Capacities and Their Measurement (1989); Otto Neurath: Philosophy between Science and Politics (1995), a co-authored volume, The Dappled World: A Study of the Boundaries of Science (1999), and Hunting Causes and Using Them (2007).

The Frumkes Lecture was established to showcase the work of the world’s most prominent philosophers and is supported by NYU alumnus Lewis Burke Frumkes. Past lecturers have been: Jonathan Lear, Susan Wolf, Harry Frankfurt, Noam Chomsky, Simon Blackburn, Peter Singer, Dame Onora O’Neill, Bernard Williams, and Jonathan Bennett.

Parvati Nair, a professor of Hispanic Cultural Studies at the University of London, has worked primarily on Spanish cultural studies and is the author of a forthcoming major study of the Spanish photographer Sebastião Salgado. In this talk, she will reconsider the parameters for understanding the work of this remarkable contemporary photographer.

Andres Bello, author of the Chilean Civil Code and founder of the Universidad de Chile, has often been celebrated or dismissed as a conservative without much attention to the ‘non-heroic’ tasks of building republics in the 19th century. The lecture, delivered by Dunkerley, will review Bello’s record as a post-colonial intellectual comparable to that of Albert Gallatin, the longest-serving U.S. treasury secretary (1801-1814) and an NYU founder.

Icons of the Desert: Early Aboriginal Paintings from Papunya

In 1971, at Papunya, a government-established Aboriginal community in Central Australia, a Sydney-based schoolteacher provided a group of men with the tools and the encouragement to paint. Known as “Papunya boards,” these works constituted the beginning of the Western Desert art movement in which indigenous Australian artists explored images and experiences in a new medium and on permanent surfaces. Drawn from the John and Barbara Wilkerson Collection, the exhibition includes masters of the Papunya School including Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Shorty Lungkarta Tjungurrayi, Johnny Warangkula Tjupurrula, and Mick Namararri Tjapaltjarri.

Exhibition is on view September 1–December 5, 2009.

The Department of Photography & Imaging in the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts has announced its first fall show will be Posing Beauty, an exhibition of approximately 80 works—including black and white, color, and digitized photographs; video installations; and web-based projects—drawn from public and private collections. The exhibition explores the contested ways in which African and African American beauty have been represented in historical and contemporary contexts in a diverse range of media.

The exhibition will be on view in the Gulf + Western Gallery and in the 8th floor gallery of the Tisch School of the Arts Department of Photography & Imaging, located at 721 Broadway (at Waverly Place) September 1, 2009 – October 18, 2009. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. This exhibition is open to the public and admission is free. Photo ID is required when entering the building. "John Wood: On the Edge of Clear Meaning"

John Wood (born 1922) challenged “pure photography” in the 1960s when he began to employ collage, cliché verre, solarization, and lithography in his work. Encompassing Wood’s career from the early 1960s to the present, the exhibition is the most comprehensive presentation of the artist’s work to date. "John Wood: On the Edge of Clear Meaning" includes over 150 photographs, mixed-media works, and artists’ books. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.

Exhibition on view May 12–July 18, 2009.

A selection of Wood’s photomontages, "Quiet Protest," will be on view concurrently at the International Center of Photography, 1133 Avenue of the Americas (at 43rd St.), May 15–September 6, 2009.

“Schubert & Solitude,” an evening of music, conversation, and art, will be held Friday, May 15, 8 p.m. at the Angel Orensanz Foundation for the Arts (172 Norfolk Street, below East Houston Street/between Essex and Suffolk Streets).

The event, which is free and open to the public, features Argentinean-born composer Osvaldo Golijov in conversation with Fred Child, radio host of National Public Radio’s “Performance Today.” It will also include the Knights chamber orchestra and string quartet Brooklyn Rider performing Golijov’s “She Was Here”—orchestral re-imaginings of four Schubert songs—as well as works by Beethoven, Philip Glass, and Charles Ives. Throughout the evening an art exhibition and the large-scale projection of composer portraits by Lennie Peterson will be on view.

This event is co-presented by the New York Institute for the Humanities, the Humanities Initiative at NYU, and In a Circle.

This event brings together many of the most important voices in the debate over the future of Coney Island. The symposium will feature three different visions for the rezoning and redevelopment of Coney, presented by New York City Planning, The Municipal Arts Society, and Thor Equities, LLC. For more than a century, Coney Island has been New York City's playground, amusement park and, in the words of entertainer and panelist Dick Zigun, the "capital of the weird." But it is also a neighborhood facing serious struggles over development. On April 22nd, New York University will participate in the 39th annual Earth Day celebration with a street fair, lectures, green projects, and an environmental networking dinner.

It'll kick-off early with a week-long schedule of events, including a lecture by Oxford University’s climate change expert Cameron Hepburn on “Earth Day Eve.” Hepburn’s lecture - “Beating Long Odds: A New Global Deal on Climate Change,” will be held Tuesday, April 21, 6:00 pm at the Gould Welcome Center, 50 West 4th Street, NYC.
The events are free and open to the public.

"Library of Dust, from the photographer David Maisel, may well be this year's most haunting book of images. It is a collection of photographs of copper canisters, each containing the unclaimed remains of a patient from a psychiatric hospital in Oregon (the same one used for filming "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"). Rivulets of chemical corrosion, almost oceanic in their intense coloring, run down the sides. Mr. Maisel's book is a fevered meditation on memory, loss, and the uncanny monuments we sometimes recover about what has gone before."

The Oregon State Insane Asylum, opened in 1883 on a hill just east of Salem and renamed the Oregon State Hospital in 1913, became in part a warehouse for the state’s anonymous unwanted. When residents died and went unclaimed by family, their bodies were cremated with the ashes remanded to copper canisters, which in turn themselves got warehoused. Decades passed, the canisters blossomed forth with all manner of colorful corrosions, the hospital started getting shut down, well into the process of which, around 2005, with what remained of the hospital under new leadership, the canister depot itself came to light. The photographer David Maisel rushed to the scene to compile the remarkable record that has become the book and traveling exhibition, Library of Dust. The New York Institute for the Humanities at NYU decided to convene an evening of witness and response to Maisel’s project at the Angel Orensanz Foundation, once among the city’s first synagogues and itself one of the most magnificently evocative ruins in the region.

Thevideo game tournament will bearound 3 pm. Competitions range from straightforward team challenges to truly bizarre ones: try playing Super Mario Bros. where one player moves and the other jumps, or Guitar Hero with one player strumming and one doing the frets, or Geometry Wars with one player shooting and the other moving, just to name a few of them. Teams play each other randomly and get points for winning, and the two highest scoring teams go head-to-head in the final game.

Later around 6 or 7 will be the board game tournament. These games range from basic stuff like team Pictionary to a bunch of games that arn't really board games...like paper airplane battles and piggyback racing!

If you don't to team up they'll be have an assortment of Rock Band / Street Fighter 4 / Brawl / pile of other games. If you don't have a partner in advance you can get one at the meeting before the tournament starts. There's no prizes since this is a battle for GLORY AND HONOR. However, everyone playing or not playing gets FREE FOOD AND DRINKS! Hope to see you there!

Financing Global Health

Presented by the NYU Global Health Alliance Student Group

Join us for a monthly event series dedicated to addressing issues around financing current global health initiatives. We welcome you to attend intimate discussions featuring prominent experts and organizations in the global health field. Panelists will speak about their respective organization's business model emphasizing its current operations, strategies, and funding sources for global health initiatives, providing background information on how these initiatives began and openly discuss challenges and successes in their work. Most importantly, they will cite actual projects and activities that will inspire current students to contribute meaningful work in these areas.

Join us, recognize some of the remarkable achievements and new innovations in global health financing, and be inspired to contribute to the enormous work that remains. Refreshments will be provided.

Part III: Public/Private Partnerships in Global Health Initiatives

It is widely accepted that global health issues need to be addressed with a comprehensive approach that includes civil society, governmental and non-governmental institutions, and the for-profit sector due to the complexity of the problem and the many strengths that can be drawn from all sectors. Join us for the final part of the Financing Global Health Monthly series to hear about examples of public/private partnerships and the challenges and successes in sustaining them.
